President's message

Hi and welcome to a new speed skating season. I am happy the season is starting and the fun can begin.

The club this year has a good mix of rookie skaters and veteran skaters, with a wide variety of ages.

Our Executive team is fairly new at their positions and are really eager to help out new members and old members. The Executive hopes to help all have a great time this year.

This is my first and only year as President of WSSC. It has been a very interesting experience and I have learned a lot since taking over in May. I am looking forward to skating this year and watching two of our members in the 2010 Olympics - Brittany Schussler and Cindy Klassen.

Our club hosted a very successful Susan Auch Speed Skating School in August and plans are in the preliminary stages to repeat this school next year.

That’s it for me,

Mike McDonald

Fundraising

We will not need to resort to selling lemonade this year. Lynne and Maxine, our dynamic duo, have planned some great fundraising campaigns!

First we have the Bud, Spud, and Steak on Nov 6th at Silverado’s. This event is a lot of fun and last time the club raised a fair amount of money. People in attendance had a really good time.
The next fundraiser is the ever-so-popular Grey Cup scratch tickets. Last year the club sold all 900 scratch tickets and it would be great if we could do it again. They’re easy to sell and it keeps the Grey Cup game interesting, even if your team is not playing.
If there are any questions about how your fundraising account is sitting please don’t hesitate to ask either Lynne or Maxine.

Bingo

There are three Bingos in the first quarter of the year. The first Bingo is coming up on Oct 06th at Club Regent.
Please mark down your Bingo dates. A missed Bingo will result in a fine of $150.00 from Manitoba Speed Skating Association.
The VP of Bingo is Mike Anderson, if you have any questions about the Bingos please direct your questions to him at cmanders@mts.net.

General Information

In order for the practices to run smoothly we ask that all parents assist with the mats. The mats need to be done before and after the practice. When everyone helps, it does not take very long and the practices can start on time.
Thanks
Mike McDonald

Team Apparel

In the past the club has ordered jackets and last year ordered bags. If you have an idea for this year please let me know and I will see if the membership will want to go forward on the idea.

Racing

During the year there are races. All skaters are encouraged to participate in these races, as it will help them to improve faster.

Thanks and have a great start to the season!
There are two kinds of meets:
1)     Ability meets – this is a meet in which the speed skater competes against skaters of the same ability. As the speed skater improves, they will move up categories. The cost of the ability meet is $10.00.

2)     Age Class meets – this is a meet in which the speed skaters race against skaters of the same age regardless of their ability.
