Learn to Skate 7-Week Programs
First Strides 1 (Ages 4.5 to 17 yrs old)
Fall + Winter Sessions
• new to skating /basic beginner
• learn to stand on skates and glide (regular skates)
• learn to fall
• learn confidence on skates
• skaters are NOT required to complete this program before entering our full-season programs but are welcome to join

Fast Strides 2 Provincial (Recreational)
(Ages 5 to 17 yrs old)
Once or twice a week
• fundamental skill level
• able to stand and move on skates
• learn to do cross-over strides
• learn to do basic edging control
• increase speed for next level

Fast Strides 2 Inter-Provincial (Competitive)
(Ages 6 to 17 yrs old)
Once or twice a week
• intermediate skill level
• 75:00 seconds minimum 400m time
• Can do cross-overs smoothly
• basic edging proficiently
• develop specific speed skating techniques and speed

Fast Strides 3 Inter-Provincial
(Ages 12+)
Once or twice a week
• Advanced skill level
• 50:00 seconds minimum 400m time
• proficient aptitude and execution of proper speed skating technique
• base physical fitness and speed to train at a high level

Speed Skate rental is available for skaters ages 6 to 18 years old in Fast Strides 2 & 3 for $125 for the season.

First Strides Learn-to-Skate starts with your own regular skates (hockey, etc).

Our Club Groups:

  • Fast Strides 2 Provincial (Recreational)is for beginning and early development skaters who are recreational skaters (no provincial meet yet). They focus on learning techniques in a fun environment so that they will develop a love for the sport in any type of skate.
  • Fast Strides 2 Inter-Provincial (Competitive) is for skaters who are developing good technique and can skate safely in a group at higher speeds in speed skates. (Will compete in provincial meets)
  • Fast Strides 3 Inter-Provincial is for skaters typically aged 12+ who also have very good technique and good control at fast speeds in speed skates. (Will compete in provincial and national meets)

The Winnipeg Speed Skating Club follows Speed Skating Canada’s new First Strides (Learn to Skate) and Fast Strides (Learn to Speed Skate) programs. This program has 10 levels, and we provide report cards in December and March for all our skaters so they can see their progress throughout the season and set goals based on the skills outlined in the report cards.
