Masters program

The WSSC Masters Skate Program is designed to introduce speed skating to adult skaters 18 years of age or older. The program aims to provide a weekly coached 75-minute session for skaters to develop their skills and techniques while getting some fresh air and exercise! Speed skates are provided, subject to sizing availability.

Where: Susan Auch Oval at the Cindy Klassen Recreation Centre

When: Thursday evenings from 6:15 to 7:30 PM. Skate fitting and orientation is January 11; practices are January 18 to February 22 (six sessions). Participants will also have access to the speed skating oval for independent practice during speed skating hours, Monday-Friday 4-7 PM and weekends 9 AM – 3 PM.

How do I register? Please register through IceReg (see the blue button marked “REGISTER NOW”). You will pay provincial and national organization fees online at the time of registration. Payment for club fees can be made either by cheque or e-transfer (registrar@winnipegspeedskating.ca). Be sure to select the “Masters” registration category.

How much does it cost: Club fees are $150.00, including skate rental. Affiliation with Speed Skating Manitoba and Speed Skating Canada are $20, to be paid online through the registration portal.

But I don’t own speed skates: We have a limited number of speed skates available.  Once you are registered, we will try to match you with a suitable pair; we will have a skate fitting session on Thursday, January 11. If we cannot accommodate this, you will need to supply your own skates (Nordic or hockey skates are acceptable.) There is a $50 discount on club fees if you bring your own skates.

What do I need to bring: Dress for the weather of course but here is a list of items you will need:

  • Skates (we have a limited number of speed skates to rent on a first come first serve basis), otherwise Nordic or hockey skates are permitted.
  • Warm “Cut Proof” gloves or mitts: Leather or hide material is best with a warm inner layer for comfort
  • Padding: Knee, elbow and shin pads are recommended
  • Cut proof socks: Kevlar or “hockey socks” that are made with materials to protect your legs from cuts from an accident with your skates or that of another skater.
  • Helmet: Not required, but highly recommended.  Hockey helmets or bike helmets are acceptable
  • Face mask or Buff: These are best to keep you face warm
  • Eyewear: helmet lens, safety glasses or ski goggles are recommended

Please note that the club fees will be directly paid to Winnipeg Speed Skating Club using cheques, the club fees are only mentioned for information. The registration page will only charge the SSM and SSC association fees.
